Tidal disruption event

Loosely inspired by the nuclear fusion process in stellar cores. This process originally gave the universe the raw elements from which to build the first atoms, and eventually human civilization.

A tidal disruption event occurs when a star ventures too close to a black hole and is torn apart by its massive gravitational force.

Image Construction:

  • The base image for this work was generated by a distorted Brownian motion algorithm and warped many times in various ways.
  • Inputs or outputs of the base texture warping functions were retained and recombined in different ways to create the masking layer. this generates the bright orange and red pattern seen
  • The background was composed of layered high frequency noise and integrated with the masked texture using yet more combinations of the same warping functions
  • Finally, post-processing and some final domain warping effects give the work its finished appearance.

the above was created using a combination of hand drawn boundaries and algorithmically determined filling (adapted from the algorithm outlined by Kenny Vaden here):

  • each bounded subregion had 150 random points generated inside of it
  • some additional points were added to select regions based on preference
  • each of the points in every subregion was connected to its closest 20 neighboring points
  • in some cases, connections crossing the shape’s outline was not allowed. in others, it was encouraged

the design was finalized after a couple years of periodic consideration, attempting to find a design with personal meaning that captures the following large ideas:

  • mathematics: specifically complex systems, information theory, and self-organization
  • neuroscience and biomechanics, especially biological systems and hierarchies of systems
  • mental expansion via a wide range of experiences
  • generative art

placing:

  • inner bicep of left arm, area ~6in sq
